Autism and us

5 April 2022 · In: Family, Features, Health, Her Story

April is World Autism Month; throughout the month, the world focus on raising awareness about Autism to increase understanding and acceptance of people with Autism—fostering worldwide support.

Cosmocreole shares some stories of challenges that both the mother and child face daily.

The stories were first published in April 2021, so if you haven’t yet read them, here’s the chance to do so.

This is Helena Sims’ story, a single full time working mum whose son Kyan is autistic. We learn about the challenges that both mother and son face daily through Helena’s story. It has been and is still a challenging journey, but one that Helena has embraced.

The prospect of raising children was always on Nyla’s life plan but what she wasn’t prepared for was that one of her children would be autistic— she had never heard about the condition until she had Mia. The challenges of raising an autistic child floored Nyla, but she didn’t give up on Mia, although there were days that she wanted to. This is Nyla and Mia’s story.

Being a first-time mum with no experience had its challenges, so being a new mum and having a child with a condition – now that is a completely different kettle of fish! We went through the whole process of grieving, self-blame, then accepting the reality and moving forward quickly. I found myself constantly crying and feeling so helpless, especially as Autism back then was not well known in Seychelles. This is Lyn and Matteo’s story
