Breaking Barriers: The Inspiring Journey of Jessica Sedgwick in Technology

“Women must feel respected and empowered to share their ideas, and creating safe spaces for collaboration is crucial.”

In a world where gender parity in tech is still a distant goal, Jessica Sedgwick is carving her path and inspiring others along the way. At just 27 years old, Jessica has navigated the challenges of a male-dominated industry, keeping her passion for technology alive and thriving. Jessica’s journey in technology is an inspiring narrative of passion, persistence, and progress.

A Personal Journey

Jessica grew up at Brilliant Estate, Mahe, and now lives in La Louise with her fiancé and their adorable daughter. She ventured into the tech industry in 2018, driven by a background in Telecommunication Systems and a strong curiosity to learn. “My interest in IT was sparked by playing with my mother’s mobile phone and exploring Paint on my father’s computer,” she shares.

Jessica’s formal career in tech took shape in 2018, when she enrolled in a three-year Diploma Course in Telecommunication Systems. Despite facing a challenging six-month job search as a fresh graduate, her determination eventually led her to the Seychelles Broadcasting Corporation (SBC). Like many women venturing into male-dominated fields, the initial experience was intimidating. Working among predominantly male colleagues, she felt the pressure to prove herself constantly. Yet, with time, diligence, and the support of dedicated mentors like her lecturer, Mr. Paul from the Seychelles Institute of Technology, along with the lifelong backing from her parents, she honed her skills and grew into her role. “Initially overwhelmed by my male colleagues at SBC, I quickly adapted as I developed my skills,” she recalls. Today, Jessica is a Broadcast & Enterprise Technology Officer at SBC, overseeing technical and operational support within the corporation.

In her current role, which demands a blend of technical expertise and interpersonal skills, Jessica emphasises the importance of strong fault-finding abilities and effective communication. “Time management and self-motivation are essential. Continuous learning is vital to staying relevant in a rapidly evolving industry,” she advises.

With advances in the technology industry, Jessica underscores the need for constant upskilling. “These innovations have streamlined workflows and transformed problem-solving approaches,” she notes. Her commitment to personal growth is evident, as demonstrated by her recent transition from a System Support Officer to her current position.

Over the years, Jessica has had the chance to serve as SBC’s spokesperson for local supplier relations. This role has allowed her to showcase her teamwork abilities and represent the company confidently. Notably, a Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) course further enriched her credentials, marking a significant milestone in her career.

The Female Perspective

However, Jessica’s journey has not been without challenges as a woman in technology. “Doubting my abilities and feeling the need to prove myself have been ongoing hurdles,” she admits. Despite these challenges, she remains determined to pave the way for more women in the field in Seychelles.

Jessica believes the tech industry can improve inclusivity by focusing on mentorship opportunities and fostering supportive workplace cultures. “Women must feel respected and empowered to share their ideas, and creating safe spaces for collaboration is crucial,” she argues.

For young women eyeing a career in tech, Jessica has a simple yet powerful message: “Embrace your curiosity and never underestimate your abilities. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and seek mentorship. Remember, there’s no single path to success—be persistent and open to new challenges.”

The Importance of Diversity

As discussions around gender diversity in tech continue to gain momentum, Jessica highlights its significant impact on innovation —looking ahead, she remains optimistic about the future of women in tech, especially in Seychelles. She envisions a landscape where diversity and inclusivity are central, powered by continuous advancements in cloud computing, AI, and 5G technology. “A diverse workforce brings together a variety of perspectives, which is essential for effective problem-solving,” she explains.

For Jessica, failure is not something to fear but a stepping stone toward expertise and she encourages everyone to remember that every expert once stood where she did—at the very beginning of an exciting, boundless adventure in technology.

Jessica’s journey is a testament to resilience and the relentless pursuit of passion in something she loves. As she continues to break barriers and inspire future generations, her story is a reminder that with curiosity, mentorship, and determination, the tech world can become more inclusive and innovative.
